Kontera Sucks

I seach Kontera sucks in Google. It seems like a whole lot of people agree with me. Kontera ContentLink sucks. Big time.

In a bid to use more ways in monetizing my websites, 2 months ago, June 1st to be exact, I added Kontera ContentLink to one of my website. Mind you, this is one with higher number of visitors and pageviews.

Pageviews

First impression is: Kontera sucks. After I installed the code from Kontera, there is nothing in my website that can show me the code is already installed properly. But Kontera says it’s normal as they take time to crawl the site in order to show appropriate ads. Fine with me.

The first few days after I put Kontera code in the website, the impression is still: Kontera sucks. There is still no sign of any ads being displayed. Logging into Publisher Center, it shows zero ads impressions.

Kontera No Ads

After nearly a week, finally the Publisher Center registers some earnings. And links are showing up in the website too. Good grief. It might be working after all, I thought. There isn’t really much pageviews yet, but some is better than none.

Kontera Some Ads

And then, the Publisher Center started to record higher number of pageviews. It isn’t as much as registered at Google Analytics, but I’m quite satisfied with about slightly less than half of the Analytics pageview.

Kontera More Ads

The earning still sucks, but up to this point, I was not really concerned about the earning, or the eCPM yet. Kontera said they need the 2 weeks time to learn about my site.

For the first one to two weeks, the algorithms behind Kontera ContentLinks are going through an automatic optimization process to “learn” all of your existing content.

So to be fair, I give them more time to work on the earning part. I waited day in and out. To be frank, I wasn’t expecting anything nearly as much as Google Adsense earning. For Kontera to give me earning of 10% from Adsense revenue would be considered satisfactory for me.

Alas, that seems too much to ask for. 3 weeks after I installed the code, there is still no change in the eCPM. If any, it seems to be dropping.

Kontera All

I’m not going to sell any more of my pageview for 1c eCPM (that’s 1000 impression for 1 cent). I had to make a cruel decision, and pulled out Kontera ads from my site.

How about you? Do you have any experience with Kontera? Are you currently using it on your blog? Let us know in the comment below.

It’s been working better for me but today I decided to remove Kontera from my main sites. They pay ridiculous $0.05 per click while I’m getting $0.30 from AdSense.

I’ll keep my sites Kontera free for a while or maybe move back to Chitika after some time.

  4. Fernando Hal says:

Sometimes it was as bad as $0.02 per day.

  5. Blogger says:

Here’s another reason why Kontera sucks.
A few days ago I removed all Kontera in-text-links from all my sites. Today I received an email from them that my account is on hold because I removed their links. WTF???
I decide what to run on my sites, not this stupid Kontera!

Well, I still have about $650 in there and I want to get my money. I reinstalled all tags but…. F*** Kontera!

As soon as I get my money back, I will start displaying Kontera ads somewhere on the bottom of my page, so there are no clicks on their ads at all. At the same time, I will not be breaking any rules. LOL. I’m so pissed off right now.

I’ve been running AdSense, Chitika, Ebay, Yahoo, and some other ads for years and ONLY Kontera trying to control my sites like they are their own. It’s not going to work!! Period!

It’s like cancer. If you got it, you cannot get rid of.

I’m glad that this post is first if you search on Google for “Kontera sucks”. That’s why I’m posting here, so more people can read it and learn from our experience.

By the way, when I removed Kontera ads I noticed that my revenue from Google AdSense and other affiliates went up significantly and it’s where I want to be!

  6. Blogger says:

I forgot to mention that their links are not relative to my Kontent.
They used to pay well, but now it’s only $0.03 per click!!!!!
    Yep, it’s so bad.
Why would I run $0.03 ads if I can get $0.30 ads on the same page???

  7. Fernando Hal says:

Agreed. Have you tried infolinks? I found their earning is slightly better than Kontera. Don’t expect anywhere near Adsense though.

I decided to get rid of all these in-text advertising links.
May be not completely, but run very limited amount per site.

  10. Fernando Hal says:

I prefer different approach. I removed those in-text advertising from non-performing sites, and leave them on sites that still give decent cpm per se.

  11. Blogger says:

    Update.
After I reduced the quantity of Kontera ads on my site, my revenue from Google AdSense and EPN went up significantly.
I’m losing about $10/day with Kontera but at the same time getting about $30-40/day more with AdSense and EPN.
I think it was a good move. :)
Not sure if this is a coincidence, I don’t think so.

  12. Fernando Hal says:

Wow. That’s certainly quite a lot of money.
I’m removing infolinks from my site right after posting this.

I tried infolinks on my site but it seems to be all a big mess with these ad providers stealing traffic for one cent clicks…just useless.

They even say…yes you can run them besides google ads…yes sure…but they leave the site over a one cent click and never come back..

They should start to implent a filter that enables a minimum BID to be be shown as ads….problem solved but they promote their own stuff to much with thefreedirectory and one cent clicks..

  15. Fernando Hal says:

Hi, I find that Infolinks pay decent. But well, it’s different from site to site.

  16. Rahul says:

I, too, removed Kontera from my website because I feel it provides a bad user experience. I wasn’t earning much either. Furthermore, I just find those little links and popups on my website very annoying.

  17. Hi Fernando,

This is Jonathan from Kontera. I can’t really comment on the specifics of your account without seeing it. If you’d like to e-mail me I’d be more than happy to go over account, and see if it can be further optimized.

Speaking in more general terms though, Kontera has an exclusive ad inventory from some of the biggest brand names in world including Microsoft, L’Oreal, National Geographic, Kmart, HP, Domino’s Pizza, Dove, Toyota, and more. These premium, often Rich-Media ads can only be found on Kontera and offer the best possible CPC.

Thank to these ads, and our Contextual Algorithm, which rather than just scanning for keywords can actually read your webpages for meaning – which provides more relevant, higher CTR results; Kontera is easily the leading In-Text network, with over 15,000 publishers and 140 million unique users per month.

With that said, who receives these premium, Rich-Media ads, or any other ad on our network is dependent on a variety of different factors, including the content of your web pages, where people are viewing your website, current campaigns running on the network, advertiser preferences and more. Kontera’s algorithm takes all of these factors into account to ensure we deliver you with the most relevant and high-performing ad.

It’s possible, that for one of those reasons you weren’t receiving the most desired ads. For instance, our ads are geo-targeted, and if an advertiser only wants to advertiser in a certain region you’re not in, you wouldn’t see those high CPC ads. However, even in that instance, readers viewing your website in that region would see them and you’d still benefit. Additionally, as we’re constantly launching new ad campaigns, the amount of ads relevant to you can only increase.

Again, if you e-mail me, I’d be happy to look into the specifics.

Regarding Blogger’s input about Adsense, we’ve found that because it’s displayed in a completely different part of the webpage, Kontera doesn’t eat into AdSense clicks, and is actually a completely new revenue stream.

Additionally, because of “banner blindness”, where some people have become so weary of seeing banner ads that they’ve learned to just ignore them completely, there’s an entire segment of your readers, who’s ad clicks you’d be losing completely if you didn’t also feature an AdSense alternative.

In fact, many of our Kontera publishers have been combined Kontera and AdSense with success for some time, in some cases even finding that after implementing Kontera, their AdSense revenue actually went up.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions :)

    Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for stopping by. I have sent you an email in regards to my Kontera account. Truth to be told, it is no longer of my concern since I have sold the website. However, I feel you might find it in your interest to improve the quality and value of the Kontera ads for publishers.

Do let me know what you think.

    Regards,
    Fernando

PS. I’m not sure whether you want your email address in public, so I have removed them.

  19. Fernando Hal says:

Here is the reply from Jonathan:

    Hi Fernando,

Looking at your account, it looks like there was a 17 day period in 2009 when you were actively getting clicks from the site. While it’s true what you read on the Kontera blog about it taking about 2 weeks for the algorithm to become optimized for your site, in this case I don’t think it was a significant factor in your site’s performance.

As I mentioned before on your blog, which ads are displayed on your site varies on many factors, among which are the content of the web page, traffic sources, current campaigns running, advertiser preferences and more. Kontera’s algorithm takes all of these factors into account to ensure we deliver you with the most relevant and high-performing ads.

My best guess is we just didn’t have enough advertisers targeting keywords and topics related to real estate in Singapore. There’s still a great chance that Kontera would be successful on other sites you have or will work on in the future.

Please let me know if I can be of any additional assistance.

    Thanks,

    - Jonathan

  20. When I installed Kontera my adsense revenue went down around 40% and the kontera revenue was pathetic… indeed KONTERA SUCKS

  21. Kontera producres pure rubbish. Their ads are not relevant at all. I am an adwords and Yahoo customer and my accounts are being drained by Kontera with their misleading ads. ie: page about air compressors. the word ‘toggle switch’ links to my knife sharpener ad.

  22. Fernando Hal says:

I don’t understand. How Kontera drain your Adwords and Yahoo account?

  23. Bryan Potts says:

Um, how about this thought, CPM gangsters and you too Jonathan Cohen: Kontera sucks for VISITORS. The popups are annoying as hell. The company should get smashed like a cockroach.

  24. Fernando Hal says:

    @brian: that’s a bit harsh, isn’t it?

  25. Ralph says:

Yes, Kontera does suck. I made decent money the first couple of weeks and then it slowly turned into a few cents per day. Having a website that makes over $300 on Adsense and $.86 on Kontera does not make sense.

Be sure to read the terms of service before pulling the plug. They will refuse to pay you if you fail to give a 30 day notice.

  26. Fernando Hal says:

Didn’t notice about the 30 day notice. But whatever it is, I don’t find it particularly upsetting to lose the few dollars in my Kontera account.
Edit: That said, I do sympathize with fellow publishers who has few hundred dollars of earning hold by Kontera.
