On-Page Search Engine Optimization

In making a site and web pages, one of the most important factors that need to be looked into is how the search engines interprets our pages. Optimized pages will help search engines put our site to rank high in search results.

20 On-Page Website Optimization Tips

  1. Keyword in the domain – One of the most important factor in search ranking is domain names. Make sure you put your most important keyword in your domain name.
  2. Directory and subdomains – For a website, we can only have one domain name, but we have the option to create directories and unlimited subdomains. Be sure to take advantage of this by placing the important keywords in the directory name or subdomain name.
  3. File names – For each page of your site, be sure to name the file with the important keywords related directly to that page.
  4. Page titles – Each web page has a title, namely the tag <TITLE> …</ TITLE> on the <HEAD> section of the HTML file. Insert keywords in the title page. Be sure to not do “keyword dumping” (insert as many keywords as possible). Enter keywords that reasonably looks like a natural sentence.
  5. Description Meta-Tag – There used to be a meta-tag keyword and description meta-tags that need to be observed. Now, meta-tag keywords are not considered important. Enter key words on the page in the form of a sentence that explains what the site pages.
  6. Content text – Ensure that the text content is consistent with the page title, description, and others that we have prepared. The contents of the text that is “cheating” in the sense might result with penalty from search engines.
  7. Headings – Make sure to use appropriate headings for every function. This can be done by using tags <H1>, <H2>, etc. …
  8. Make sure there is only one version of the file – Do not let a single page accessible from several different URLs. This can result in a penalty from Google. When necessary, use canonical URL.
  9. Validation – Use http://validator.w3.org/ to make sure that the code is correctly written. Poorly validated code is likely to make our pages not crawl-able by search engines.
  10. Sitemap – Sitemap provides help to search engines to find pages on our site
  11. Regular good content – No tricks that can attract visitors on an ongoing basis if we do not provide a strong reason for people to visit our site. Add high-quality articles on a regular basis.
  12. Provide robots.txt file – the robots.txt file tells search engines whether our pages may be visited or not.
  13. Hosting – Be sure to use quality hosting. Hosting that is always unavailable every time Google bot visits will make Google rarely visit the site again.
  14. Image Optimization – make sure that the image that we display on our web page has Alt and Title text.
  15. Site age – The longer a site has been active, the likely it will be favored by search engines. The reason is because the older a site is, it is considered more authoritative and have quality content.
  16. Live link – Check all the links within our site, make sure there is no dead-link, that is linking to the page that is not available.
  17. RSS feeds – Provide RSS feeds of the site to facilitate search engines to find addition or change in our site.
  18. Number of pages – The more content we have, the more our site is considered as important sites
  19. Site structure – Design your site so we have a structure that is as flat possible. This means, reduce the depth of the directory. For example, try to make it that there is only 1 level below the directory domain.
  20. Copywriting – means designing our article in such a way that is by placing the keywords repeatedly in the article but within normal context.
